The ICAP CA Qualification — A Brief Overview
The Chartered Accountancy qualification in Pakistan has multiple progressive stages. You cannot skip ahead — each stage must be cleared before the next. Here is the full sequence:
PRC — Preliminary Requirement (CA Foundation)
CAF — Certificate in Accounting and Finance
CFAP — Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business
MSA — Multi-Subject Assessment
CA Final / Membership
PRC comes first. CAF comes second. There is no shortcut — PRC clearance is mandatory before you can attempt CAF.
What is CA Foundation (PRC)?
PRC is the entry-level stage. It is designed to build foundational knowledge in accounting, business, economics, and quantitative methods. It is primarily MCQ-based (computer-based test) and tests conceptual and numerical understanding.
Subjects: FOA, BAE (Vol I + Vol II), QAFB
Format: MCQ-based CBT
Level: Introductory — Matriculation to early Intermediate level
Duration: 2-hour paper per subject
Most students attempt PRC while in Intermediate (Grade 11-12) or immediately after. It is the starting point for everyone entering the CA programme, regardless of academic background.
What is CAF?
CAF — Certificate in Accounting and Finance — is the second stage of the ICAP CA qualification. It is substantially more advanced than PRC and requires a deeper understanding of accounting standards, finance, taxation, and law.

Format: Mix of written papers and CBT — more subjective and analytical

The best strategy is to focus entirely on clearing PRC first — then redirect your energy to CAF preparation with the right textbooks and support materials for that stage.
