One of the most common questions from new CA students in Pakistan is the difference between CA Foundation (PRC) and CAF. The two names are often used interchangeably by students — incorrectly — and the confusion can lead to misaligned preparation and wasted effort.

This article explains exactly what each stage is, how they differ, and the correct sequence of the ICAP CA qualification.

The ICAP CA Qualification — A Brief Overview

The Chartered Accountancy qualification in Pakistan has multiple progressive stages. You cannot skip ahead — each stage must be cleared before the next. Here is the full sequence:

  1. PRC — Preliminary Requirement (CA Foundation)

  2. CAF — Certificate in Accounting and Finance

  3. CFAP — Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business

  4. MSA — Multi-Subject Assessment

  5. CA Final / Membership

PRC comes first. CAF comes second. There is no shortcut — PRC clearance is mandatory before you can attempt CAF.

What is CA Foundation (PRC)?

PRC is the entry-level stage. It is designed to build foundational knowledge in accounting, business, economics, and quantitative methods. It is primarily MCQ-based (computer-based test) and tests conceptual and numerical understanding.

Subjects: FOA, BAE (Vol I + Vol II), QAFB

Format: MCQ-based CBT

Level: Introductory — Matriculation to early Intermediate level

Duration: 2-hour paper per subject

Most students attempt PRC while in Intermediate (Grade 11-12) or immediately after. It is the starting point for everyone entering the CA programme, regardless of academic background.

What is CAF?

CAF — Certificate in Accounting and Finance — is the second stage of the ICAP CA qualification. It is substantially more advanced than PRC and requires a deeper understanding of accounting standards, finance, taxation, and law.

Total subjects: 8 subjects across multiple papers

Key subjects: Financial Accounting, Business Finance, Tax, Company Law, Audit

Format: Mix of written papers and CBT — more subjective and analytical

Level: Intermediate to advanced — comparable to early degree

Prerequisite: Must have cleared PRC first

CAF Subjects at a Glance

  • CAF 1: Financial Accounting and Reporting

  • CAF 2: Taxation Principles and Compliance

  • CAF 4: Business Law Dynamics

  • CAF 5: Management Accounting

  • CAF 6: Corporate Reporting

  • CAF 7: Business Insights and Analysis

  • CAF 8: Audit and Assurance Essentials

Key Differences: PRC vs CAF

Level of difficulty: PRC is introductory; CAF is significantly more advanced

Question format: PRC is MCQ-focused; CAF includes written, analytical, and case-based questions

Subjects: PRC has 3 core subject areas; CAF has 8 distinct papers

Time to complete: PRC: 1 attempt; CAF: typically 2 to 4 years

Prerequisites: PRC requires Inter; CAF requires PRC clearance

MCQ practice tools: PRC is well-suited to platforms like Preptio; CAF requires more textbook-based study

A critical note for Preptio users: Preptio is purpose-built for PRC (CA Foundation) students. The platform is optimised for MCQ practice, mock tests, and the exam format of PRC. CAF students are welcome but the platform is most effective at the Foundation stage.

Can You Prepare for Both at the Same Time?

Technically no — you must clear PRC before registering for CAF. However, some students use their PRC preparation period to also build foundational knowledge that helps them in CAF later, particularly in Financial Accounting (FOA foundations transfer to CAF Financial Reporting).

The best strategy is to focus entirely on clearing PRC first — then redirect your energy to CAF preparation with the right textbooks and support materials for that stage.
