Exam registration is done. The date is approaching. And somewhere in the back of your mind, a small voice is asking: am I actually ready for this?
The honest answer for many students is: not yet โ but there is still time if you act on it. Here are five clear signs that your preparation still has gaps, and what to do about each one before exam day.

Test your knowledge with real CA exam questions โ completely free.
Sign 1: You Cannot Do a Full Trial Balance From Memory
If someone gives you a full trial balance with 6 to 8 adjustments and asks you to produce a complete SOCI and SOFP โ and you need to look at your notes to remember the format โ you are not ready for the FOA paper.
Financial Statements in FOA is worth 15 to 20 marks per paper. Students who cannot produce the format from memory consistently lose significant marks on this section, even when they understand the individual adjustments.
What to Do
Stop reading about Financial Statements. Start producing them. Preptio's Financial Statements practice module has 11 full trial balance cases with 223 questions in the exact ICAP exam format. Do one case every day for the next two weeks. By the end, the format will be automatic.

Sign 2: You Are Still Discovering New Topics
If you are encountering topics in your revision that you are seeing 'for the first time' โ topics that were always in the syllabus but somehow never got covered โ you have a syllabus gap problem. Discovery of new topics this close to the exam is a red flag.
What to Do
Run a complete chapter checklist against the official ICAP syllabus for each subject. Identify every chapter you have not touched. Prioritise them ruthlessly โ cover the highest-weighted chapters first. Use Preptio's chapter-wise practice to quickly assess your knowledge level on each topic before committing time to it.
Sign 3: Your Mock Test Scores Are Below 50%
If you have attempted a full mock test for any subject on Preptio and your score is consistently below 50% โ the passing threshold โ you are not yet in a passing position for that subject.
Many students avoid mock tests until they feel 'ready enough' to take them. This is exactly backwards. Mock tests are diagnostic tools โ take them early and often, so you have time to act on the results.
What to Do
Take a BAE Mock Test and a FOA Financial Statements case today โ regardless of how prepared you feel. If the score is below 50%, your Preptio analytics will show you exactly which chapters are pulling your score down. Build a Custom Quiz targeting only those weak chapters. Repeat the mock after 5 to 7 days of targeted practice.
Sign 4: You Cannot Explain Core Concepts in Simple Terms
A strong test of real understanding is whether you can explain a concept in plain language. Can you explain the difference between an accrual and a prepayment without looking at your notes? Can you describe the law of diminishing marginal returns in one sentence? Can you explain what straight-line depreciation means to someone who has never heard of it?
If you can only recall definitions and cannot explain the logic behind them, you have surface-level knowledge. ICAP MCQs are specifically designed to expose surface-level knowledge โ they present scenarios that require applied understanding, not memorised definitions.
What to Do
After studying each chapter, close your notes and write a one-paragraph summary of the chapter in your own words. If you cannot do it, you have not understood it deeply enough yet. Then go back and re-study the parts that were unclear.
Sign 5: You Have Not Built a Study Routine
If your current preparation consists of occasional study sessions with no fixed schedule โ studying when you feel motivated and skipping when you do not โ your preparation is inconsistent. And inconsistent preparation produces inconsistent results.
The students who clear CA Foundation on the first attempt are not necessarily studying 8 hours a day. Many of them study 1.5 to 2 hours daily, consistently, for 4 to 5 months. Consistency over time is more powerful than intensity in bursts.
What to Do
Set a fixed daily study window โ even 60 minutes at the same time every day. Use Preptio's daily streak system to build the habit. The streak counter tracks your consecutive days of practice and milestone badges reinforce consistency. Students on a 30-day streak on Preptio have typically completed 1,500+ practice questions โ a volume that genuinely builds exam readiness.
The Good News
If you recognised yourself in any of these signs โ the good news is that you have identified the exact problem. Knowing your specific gap is far more valuable than a vague sense of unease. Targeted action on a specific problem is always more effective than general revision.
Preptio gives you the tools to address all five gaps directly: Financial Statements cases for format fluency, chapter-wise practice for syllabus coverage, mock tests for readiness assessment, and daily streaks for consistency.
